Where does your WPM stand?

Our rank system borrows the six tiers of the imperial civil examination — a nod to the Chinese typing world this site comes from. Each tier maps to an internationally recognized speed benchmark.

How to actually get faster

Accuracy first. Speed built on sloppy keystrokes collapses under correction overhead. A 60 WPM run at 98% accuracy beats a 70 WPM run at 90% — every mistyped character costs you a backspace, and backspaces are pure dead time. Aim to keep accuracy above 96% before chasing raw speed.

Stop looking at the keyboard. The single biggest jump most typists get comes from committing to touch typing. Anchor your index fingers on the F and J bumps, and force your eyes to stay on the text. The first week feels slower; the second week is where the speed lives.

Practice in short, daily sessions. Fifteen focused minutes a day beats a two-hour weekend binge. Muscle memory consolidates with regular repetition — come back tomorrow, take the daily challenge, and watch your trend line climb.

Read ahead, not at. Advanced typists keep their eyes a word or two ahead of what their fingers are doing. Try gliding your gaze forward as you type; hesitation at word boundaries is usually an eyes problem, not a fingers problem.

Frequently asked questions

What is WPM and how is it calculated?

WPM (Words Per Minute) is the international standard for typing speed. Since English words vary in length, the convention is to count every 5 characters (including spaces) as one word: typing 300 correct characters in one minute equals 60 WPM. This page follows that standard exactly, and also reports your Raw WPM (all typed characters including mistakes).

What is a good typing speed in WPM?

The global average is roughly 40 WPM. Around 50 WPM handles everyday office work comfortably, 70 WPM exceeds most professional requirements, 90 WPM is professional transcription level, and 110+ WPM belongs to competitive typists. Our six-tier rank system (Kaimeng to Hanlin) maps your score onto these benchmarks.

Do I need a special keyboard or input method?

No. Any standard keyboard works — just make sure your system input method is set to English before you start. The real lever is touch typing: rest your index fingers on the F and J bumps, assign each finger its own keys, and stop looking down at the keyboard.

Is my data stored or shared?

No. All scores, streaks and personal bests are saved locally in your browser only. Submitting a score to the public leaderboard is optional and anonymous (a nickname you choose) — we never ask for an email or account to take the test.
